Bobbie has been a long time early educator and began her university teaching career at University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 1969. She was a major force in each step that the College made as it increased its degree and program offerings and its influence in helping professions and teacher effectiveness fields.
She retired after 37 years with the rank of Professor Emeritus of Child and Family Development. Her formal education includes: BA, 1951, Recreation-Sociology and Physical Education; MS, 1968, Child Development and Education; PhD, 1974, Child Development and Family Relations. Her research focus expanded over the years and included: Infancy and the Early Years; Teacher Effectiveness; Family Relations; Creativity; and Developmentally Appropriate Curriculum for Young Children.
Bobbie's passion was and continues to be meeting the developing needs of children and their families. Her service record to the College, the University, the community, the state, and both nationally and internationally speaks for itself and includes: Founding Member and Past President of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg and Gaston County Children's Advocacy Councils; Serving on State and Community Task Forces and Committees; Planner and Developer of UNC Charlotte's BA in Child and Family Development and the MED in Child and Family Studies; Past member of the Gaston County School Board and Gaston College Board of Trustees; and Past president of NCAEYC (North Carolina Association for the Education of Young Children). She has also served as President of the UNC Greensboro Alumni Association (1996-1997) and chair of the Gaston County Commission of the Family.
Recognized as an Advocate for Children and Families, she has received numerous awards such as the first NC Child Advisory Institute's "Services for Children Award" (1984); the NCAEYC "Service to Children Award", the "Dolly" Award from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Council for Children (1984); Gaston County's "For Children's Sake" Award (1986) and the "Family Advocate of the Year Award" presented by the Gaston County Commission on the Family (2006). In 1997 she received the UNC Charlotte Alumni Faculty Service Award.
An avid traveler, Bobbie has conducted world-wide travel studies in Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, and Australia and worked with special early education projects in Nigeria and Denmark.
